How the Size Scaler Works
Crochet gauge is the key variable between patterns and reality. This calculator uses the ratio of your gauge to the pattern’s gauge to predict exactly how large your finished amigurumi will be — and gives you multipliers to adjust yarn and stuffing quantities accordingly.
The Scaling Formulas
Scale Factor (SF) = Your Gauge ÷ Pattern Gauge
Predicted Size = Pattern Size × SF
Yardage Multiplier = SF² — because yarn covers a 2D surface: if you scale both width and height, total area (and yarn) scales by the square of the factor.
Stuffing Multiplier = SF³ — stuffing fills a 3D volume, which scales by the cube of the size factor.
Worked Example
A pattern is written for worsted (20 sc/10 cm) at 10 cm diameter. You want to crochet it in fingering (32 sc/10 cm). SF = 20 ÷ 32 = 0.625. Predicted size = 10 × 0.625 = 6.25 cm. Yardage multiplier = 0.625² = 0.39× (use 39% of the stated yardage). Stuffing multiplier = 0.625³ = 0.24×.

FAQ
Why does gauge change when I use a smaller hook?
A smaller hook pulls less yarn through each stitch, producing tighter, smaller stitches. With the same yarn, going down one hook size (e.g. from 4.0 mm to 3.5 mm) typically increases your stitch count per 10 cm by 2–4 stitches, making the finished piece smaller.
Should I swatch before starting a large amigurumi?
Yes — especially if you are changing yarn weight or hook size. A 10×10 cm swatch takes 10 minutes and can save hours of re-work. Crochet it in the round (tube) since flat and in-the-round tension differ for most makers.
Why does yardage scale by the square, not linearly?
Yarn covers stitches, which tile the surface of your piece. If you double the finished size (SF = 2), each dimension doubles, so total surface area = 2 × 2 = 4× larger, requiring 4× as much yarn. That is why SF² is the correct multiplier.
Does tension (how tightly I crochet) affect the calculation?
Yes. Two makers using identical yarn and hook can produce different gauges. If your tension is looser than average for a given weight, your gauge will be lower and your piece larger. Always measure your swatch and enter the measured gauge as a custom value for greatest accuracy.
Can I use this to scale up a pattern for a giant stuffed toy?
Absolutely. Enter the pattern’s original size and a lower gauge (thicker yarn), and the calculator shows you the predicted size and how much more yarn and stuffing you will need. Keep in mind that very large amigurumi may need wire or foam armatures to hold their shape.
What is the stuffing multiplier used for?
If the original pattern uses 30 g of polyfill, and your stuffing multiplier is 2.7×, you will need approximately 81 g. This prevents both under-stuffing (floppy toy) and over-buying stuffing you will not use.
