How the Yarn Calculator Works
Estimating yarn for a multi-part amigurumi is tricky because each body part has a different shape, stitch count, and number of rounds. This calculator uses a stitch-based estimate with yarn consumption figures calibrated to typical amigurumi tension (hook one size smaller than recommended).
The Estimation Method
For each part, total stitches are estimated as: average stitches per round × number of rounds. For a sphere or egg, average stitches ≈ widest round × 0.6 (accounting for the increase and decrease phases). For a cylinder, average = widest (constant). For a cone, average ≈ widest × 0.5. For a flat circle, total stitches use the circle formula.
Yarn consumed = total stitches × (m per 10 sc ÷ 10). The m per 10 sc rates are:

The optional 15% buffer covers tails, colour changes, slight tension variation, and the sewing thread used to attach parts.
Worked Example — Classic Bear
Head: sphere, 36 sts widest, 18 rounds. Body: sphere, 48 sts, 20 rounds. 2 ears: half-domes, 18 sts, 6 rounds each. 4 limbs: cylinders, 12 sts, 8 rounds each. Using worsted (0.55 m/10 sc) with 15% buffer → approximately 130–150 m total from a single 200 m skein.
FAQ
How accurate are these estimates?
Within ±20% for most standard amigurumi at tight tension. Accuracy increases when you enter measured rounds rather than estimating. Surface-area-based estimates like this one are more reliable than weight-based guesses because stitch geometry is more consistent than yarn density.
Why add a 15% buffer?
Every finished piece uses extra yarn for: starting and ending tails (4–6 cm each), sewing parts together (can use 40–60 cm per join), embroidered facial features, and the natural variation in personal tension versus the calibration values. 15% covers all of these in most cases.
Should I enter widest stitches or starting stitches?
Enter the widest stitch count — the highest number of stitches in any round for that part. For a sphere, this is the maximum before decreasing. For a cylinder, it is the constant stitch count. The calculator adjusts for the shape’s profile automatically.
How do I handle colour changes?
Run each colour as a separate part. If a sphere head has a white body and brown snout section, enter the snout as a flat circle part and estimate its stitch count separately. Add the results together for each colour’s total yardage.
Can I use this for non-amigurumi stuffed toys?
Yes — the shape estimates work for any crocheted 3D object using similar tension. For tapestry crochet (carrying a second colour), multiply your yarn estimate by 1.8 to account for the float carried on the wrong side.
What is “m per 10 sc” and how was it calculated?
It is the length of yarn consumed to work 10 single crochet stitches at tight amigurumi tension. It was derived by measuring 100-stitch test swatches in each yarn weight with a hook one size smaller than the label recommendation, then averaging across three yarn brands per weight category.
