How the Calculator Works
Safety eye size is proportional to head diameter. This calculator converts your head measurement to the nearest commercially available safety eye size in mm, and places the eyes on the correct round using standard amigurumi construction geometry.
The Sizing Formula
Raw eye diameter = head diameter × style percentage
- Kawaii: 14–16% of head diameter (big, cartoon look)
- Classic: 10–12% of head diameter (standard amigurumi)
- Realistic: 8–9% of head diameter (subtle, mature proportions)
The raw diameter is then rounded to the nearest available safety eye size: 4.5, 6, 7.5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 24, or 30 mm.
Eye Placement Rules
Vertical placement: Eyes sit approximately 1/3 of the way down from the top of the head. For a sphere head with R rounds, eyes go between rounds (R × 0.33) and (R × 0.40).
Horizontal spacing: Eyes are placed approximately stitches-around ÷ 5 stitches apart. For a 36-stitch head, eyes are 7 stitches apart (one eye on each side of centre front).
Safety Note for Children’s Toys
Safety eyes with plastic backs are NOT recommended for children under 3 years old or any toy that may be chewed. For infant toys, embroider eyes with yarn instead. No amount of secure backing makes plastic eyes fully choke-proof for very young children.

What sizes do safety eyes come in?
The most widely available sizes are: 4.5, 6, 7.5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 24, and 30 mm. Some specialty suppliers also offer 5, 7, and 11 mm. This calculator rounds to the nearest standard size so you can order from any supplier.
When do I attach safety eyes during construction?
Attach safety eyes before stuffing the head and before closing the decrease rounds past the widest point. Once the piece is below 60% of max stitches (decreasing toward closure), access is too tight to push the backing onto the post. Insert both posts, check symmetry, then press the washers fully home before adding polyfill.
How many stitches apart should eyes be?
The calculator recommends stitches-around ÷ 5 as a starting point. For a 36-stitch head that is 7 stitches. Eyes closer together look more cartoonish; eyes further apart (÷ 4) read as more natural. Always test placement with pins before committing, as tiny differences dramatically change expression.
Can I use craft eyes instead of safety eyes?
Craft eyes with flat backs can be glued on but will not withstand pulling. For toys used by anyone who might tug on the eyes, use locking safety eyes (post + washer) or embroider. Glue-on eyes are suitable for display pieces, home decor amigurumi, and wall hangings.
What does “kawaii” style mean for eye size?
Kawaii (Japanese for “cute”) style uses proportionally oversized eyes — 14 to 16% of the head diameter. A 10 cm head would get 14–16 mm eyes. This exaggerated proportion creates the big-eyed, childlike look typical of Japanese character designs and is the most popular style for soft toy amigurumi.
My eyes look wrong after I close the head — what happened?
Eye placement shifts as you decrease because the fabric pulls inward. This is why placement should be done with the head at 60–70% filled and the rounds at the widest stitch count. Also, pushing the washer on firmly flattens the fabric around the eye post — always check both eyes from the front before locking them in.
