Every December there is a version of the same post on every crochet forum: “I started my gifts in November, I have twelve to finish, help.” The answer is always the same: the gifts should have been started in October, which is when this article is most useful — and when most people are not yet thinking about Christmas.
This is the production calendar. The one you save now and open on October 1st.
Why October is the correct start date
Christmas gifting pressure arrives in stages. The emotional deadline is the gathering — the moment you see the person. For most people, that is between December 20th and 26th. The actual finish deadline is one week before that gathering, to allow for blocking, drying, packaging, and the inevitable frogging of the thing you thought was done.
Work backwards: December 13th as the hard finish date. November has thirty days, October has thirty-one. That is ten weeks from October 1st. Ten weeks is enough for any reasonable Christmas crochet list — if you start on October 1st. It is not enough if you start on November 15th.
The secondary reason: October yarn shops are stocked. November yarn shops have gaps. The colourways you want for specific gifts need to be ordered before they sell out, which means knowing what you are making before the order window closes.
Week-by-week calendar: October 1 through December 13
Weeks 1–2 (Oct 1–14): Planning and materials
Do not crochet yet. Make a gift list. Assign one pattern to each recipient. Order yarn for the full list in one batch — you will use the rest over winter. Download and read every pattern PDF before you cast on a single stitch. Identify the one pattern in the list that you have never tried before and buy it this week. Discovery time is planning time, not production time.

Weeks 3–4 (Oct 15–28): Long-burn projects
Start the one project that takes the most hours. Blankets, stockings, and cardigans go here. Q: Can I start Christmas crochet in November and still finish in time?
A: You can finish a small list — four to six quick-make items. You cannot finish a full family gift list, a blanket, and decorations. November starters need to pick one or two gifts and give everything else in another form.
Q: How do I estimate hours per project before I start?
