This question comes up on Reddit’s r/crochet with remarkable regularity: “My tension changed halfway through and now the piece looks wrong — do I have to start over?” The short answer is: usually not. The long answer is this article.

Tension is not a fixed property of a person or even a person’s hands on a given day. It is a relationship between yarn, hook, posture, fatigue, and time of day. Understanding which of those changed mid-project tells you what to do about it.

What tension actually is (and what changes it)

Tension in crochet is the amount of resistance your hands apply to the yarn as the hook pulls it through. More resistance = tighter stitches = smaller, denser fabric. Less resistance = looser stitches = larger, more open fabric.

The variables that shift tension mid-project:

Fatigue. Your first hour of crocheting and your fourth hour of crocheting produce different tension. Most people tighten under fatigue as they grip the hook harder. Some loosen as their hands tire. If your piece gets tighter toward the bottom of a project and looser at the top, you are working sessions backward — stopping at fatigue instead of stopping at a natural break point.

Posture. Slouching tightens tension; upright posture loosens it. The position of your yarn hand relative to the hook hand affects how much resistance the yarn experiences. A change in seating position mid-project is a common cause of unnoticed tension shifts.

Anxiety about the project. This is not a joke. When a project is going well, most people’s grip relaxes. When a crochet piece is looking wrong, people tend to work more carefully — which often means more tightly, which makes the problem worse.

Yarn temperature. Acrylic yarn gets slightly more pliable as it warms in your hands. Cotton does not. If you switch between yarn types mid-project, the tension resistance changes.

Diagnosing the shift: where did it change?

Hold the piece up against a light source (a window works well). Tension changes often show as a visible line or band in the fabric — a row where the stitches are noticeably tighter or looser than their neighbours. This is the diagnosis point.

If the shift is one or two rows: This is almost always a single session difference — you picked it up fresh after stopping mid-round, or you were interrupted mid-row. One or two off-tension rows in the interior of a piece are rarely visible once the project is finished and blocked.

If the shift runs through multiple rows: This is a habit change — something about your technique or posture changed. Identify the variable. Did you change seating? Start working later in the evening? If the shift is at the edges only: You are changing tension specifically at the turning chain and first stitch of each row. This is the most common tension fault in flat crochet. The fix is to pull the turning chain slightly looser than feels right and to not pull the first stitch tight before working the second.

Fix 1: Hook size adjustment (for significant tension changes)

If a tension shift is significant — more than 10% difference in stitch size — the most effective mid-project fix is a hook size change by 0.5 mm. Go up if you have tightened; go down if you have loosened. Work a swatch at the new hook size, hold it against the original tension section, and verify they match before continuing on the project.

Fix 2: Posture reset (for gradual drift)

If you cannot identify a single moment of change but the piece has gradually shifted over many sessions, the problem is almost certainly postural drift. Reset:

  • Sit with your back supported and your elbows at 90 degrees when working.
  • The yarn hand should rest at approximately hip height. Raising the yarn hand tightens tension; lowering it loosens.
  • Hold the hook at the same position in your palm — not closer to the tip or further back.

Work a single test row after resetting posture. Compare it to the original tension row by measuring stitch width (a ruler is more reliable than an eye comparison).

Fix 3: The deliberate loosening technique

For tight tension that you want to bring down without changing hook size: consciously insert the hook deeper into each stitch than feels necessary. The deeper insertion widens the stitch slightly before you yarn over. With practice, this becomes automatic and produces a consistent, slightly looser tension from existing technique.

When the shift cannot be fixed mid-project

For shaped pieces — amigurumi, fitted garments, anything with structured edges — a significant tension shift in the middle of the piece usually requires frogging from the change point and reworking the affected sections. The change is structurally visible in the finished piece and does not block out.

For flat decorative pieces (blankets, coasters, table runners), a tension shift in the middle reads as a band in the texture. Whether this is acceptable depends on the project.

Free tip: the pre-session tension check

Before picking up any in-progress project, work two test chains. They should feel identical to the last two chains you worked at the last session. If they feel different — tighter, looser, different grip — work five minutes of scrap chain before continuing. This resets your hands to current tension and prevents the most common session-boundary shift.

Q: Will blocking fix a tension shift?

A: Wet blocking evens minor tension variations in natural fibre yarn (wool, cotton, bamboo). It does not fix significant structural differences. Acrylic does not block in the same way — steam is required, and results are variable.

Q: Is there a way to measure tension changes mid-project without a gauge square?

A: Photograph the piece under the same lighting in each session. Tension changes are often invisible in person but visible in comparison photographs. App-based stitch measurement tools exist for this purpose.

A: Swatching tension and project tension differ because swatching is a deliberate act under observation while project crocheting happens under the cognitive load of pattern-following.
